Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources (pronounced "fire"). The modern data standard for exchanging health information between systems.
Why It Matters
Mandated by the 21st Century Cures Act. FHIR uses RESTful APIs and JSON/XML to exchange health data. It is the successor to older HL7 standards and is now the required standard for certified health IT. VA Lighthouse APIs use FHIR. If you are building health IT integrations, FHIR is your starting point.
