Why It Matters
TEFCA establishes the rules of the road for nationwide health information exchange. It connects existing health information networks (Carequality, eHealth Exchange, DirectTrust, etc.) into a unified framework. ONC oversees TEFCA. For federal health IT, TEFCA is the path toward actual data exchange between DoD, VA, and the commercial healthcare system — the kind that works without a phone call and a fax machine.
