Request for Information. The government asking industry "what can you do?" before writing a formal solicitation.
Why It Matters
Not a contract, and not necessarily a signal that a contract is coming. The majority of RFIs do not result in a formal solicitation. Treat your RFI response as market research for the government and a relationship-building exercise, not a sales opportunity. That said, responding well to an RFI can shape the eventual requirements in your favor.
